Who Was Charlotte Mason?

Charlotte Mason (1842–1923) was a British educational reformer who developed an influential philosophy emphasizing the nurturing of children as whole persons—body, mind, and soul—through: the highest-quality literature, the arts, nature study, narration, short lessons, productive leisure, and habit training. She founded the Parents' National Educational Union (PNEU), established a teacher-training college, and wrote a six-volume series on education, amongst other works. A devout Anglican, Mason understood children are born persons created in the image of God, and believed education was "an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life" under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and insisted that the Gospels and a vital Christian faith should form the core of every child's education into a well-rounded, virtuous soul such as wise Solomon.

The Home Education Series

Charlotte Mason’s six-volume Home Education Series presents a comprehensive, distinctly Christian philosophy of education in which children are treated as born persons (souls) made in the image of God, entitled to a wide, generous curriculum and a rich life of ideas. She teaches that education is an atmosphere, a discipline, and a life; that knowledge is not merely information poured in but vital relationships formed with God, man, and the universe; that the Holy Spirit is the true Educator; and that children learn best through living books, direct contact with nature, narration, short focused lessons, and the careful formation of habits.
The series covers the training of children from infancy through adolescence, the responsibilities of parents and teachers, the cultivation of character and conscience, and will, and the use of a broad feast of history, literature, science, art, music, languages, and Scripture, all offered in a spirit of reverence and joy.
